‘Nancy Baldwin’s paintings on canvas cover a range of subjects – the landscape and man in it, the nude, and domestic interiors. Although sometimes dominated by towering cliffs or a vast open landscape, figures in Nancy’s paintings are always integral to the piece.
Life drawing was an essential part of all art students’ training and she has continued with that discipline – the human figure is still central to her working practice. While the nude has been one of Nancy Baldwin’s most consistent subjects, her pieces are drawn and painted from memory. This also applies to painting places she has visited – she relies on her own recollections ‘If works are made directly from life’ she feels ‘that there is too much of a temptation to incline towards realism’ – contemplation on her return before painting in the studio allows her to ‘crystallise the experience’ giving her time to digest what she has seen, and from it, take what she needs.’
