These new pots from the studio represent an exciting collaboration between Gordon and Nancy Baldwin, husband and wife. Gordon makes the pot and then hands over to Nancy who uses the form as a three-dimensional canvas for her drawing.
Nancy originally studied pottery at Central, as did Gordon, but went on to pursue her artistic career as a painter. Nancy’s keen interest in ballet has been a consistent theme in her painting and the figure is still the central focus with these new pots.
The idea of collaborating is a fairly recent one. Initially the vessels were taller and flatter but this was considered too much like a canvas and subsequently the more rounded shape was developed. The figures wrap around the surface and one is invited to explore the whole vessel. Nancy works directly on the clay surface, scratching and marking and then applying glazes over a number of firing cycles. Many of the pots have been fired six times.
