Clare’s work shows a preoccupation with contrast, both visual and tactile. She explores colour and texture as an expression of her long standing fascination with naturally occurring vessel/container forms and latterly with the ageing process of architecture and artefacts.
She finds throwing on the wheel the most satisfying method of working due to its immediacy, tension and perfection of form made possible by using throwing ribs rather than fingertips in the final stages.
Clare uses a high quality coarse clay which allows the vessels to be thrown thinly while retaining their inherent strength. The material by it’s nature acts as a key for the decoration of the exterior surface. Clare has developed a technique of layering vitreous slips onto the still damp pot to provide a rugged texture, which is seen against a satin-matt glaze applied to the inside.
