Serena’s miniature curiosities were originally inspired by visits to museums and junk shops. The discovery of a pair of white kid gloves of extreme length and with tiny wrists, opened the door to her passion for European historical costume designs. Exaggerated fashion accessories with a total disregard for practicalities are of particular interest to Serena and having started by making gloves she soon diverted her attentions to wigs and footwear.
Although not working to a fixed scale Serena makes everything smaller than its original. She distorts proportions to create spindly stockings and elongated boots.
Serena’s work is presented like museum pieces, accompanied by tiny descriptive labels. Miniature shoes have carved wooden heels and oddments of antique lace or a disguarded wedding veil may all be transformed to create the “Serena Effect”.
