Liam Flynn

Liam makes ‘Hollow form Vessels’ from wood. Living in Ireland, he prefers to use locally available woods such as oak, ash and sycamore which are turned when the wood is still in its green state. What particularly interests Liam is what happens during the drying process. The shape of the piece shifts uniformly as tension is released through the elastic fibres of the wet wood.

Most of the oak pieces are ‘ebonised’ using an iron staining technique. Liam does this because he feels that the natural grain coloration of the piece can hide the more tactile qualities such as the subtle textural change which occurs during the transition from the wet to the dry state.

Many of the recent pieces are ‘inner rimmed vessels’. These are first turned with two rims. The outer rim is then carved into an ovoid shape which contrasts with the more circular inner rim.
