Richard designs and makes fumed raku ceramics and has worked solely with raku since leaving college in 1984.
He enjoys the hands on approach to the process whereby he can work with the piece throughout the firing cycle.
Raku is a process of firing clay that originated in Japan. The pot to be rakued is rapidly fired until glowing red, about 1000 degrees centigrade. The pot is then taken from the hot kiln using tongs and is placed in a container of sawdust and shavings. These combustible materials instantly burst into flames which consume the local oxygen and cause the pot and glaze to react. Thus, the characteristic black clay body and dark, craze lines in the glaze are produced.
