Chris has been a potter for 25 years. Trained as a production thrower by Hugh West, Chris still uses the skills of precision in the work he makes today.
Raku is a process of firing clay that originated in Japan. The pot to be rakued is rapidly fired until glowing red, about 1000 degrees centigrade. The pot is then taken from the hot kiln using tongs and is placed in a container of sawdust and shavings. These combustible materials instantly burst into flames which consume the local oxygen and cause the pot and glaze to react. Metals are drawn to the surface by the reduction process, creating the rich iridescent colours and lustres found on Chris’ pots. The ensuing smoke carbonises the body of the pot resulting in the characteristic black.
