Tom Sutton

After teaching art for many years, Tom became a freelance artist in 1997. Although originally trained as a painter and printer, he now works in ceramics with the architecture of Venice being his main inspiration. Tom is particularly interested in the facades of buildings which display the effects of time on their surfaces; flaking stucco, weather staining and peeling paint work. The juxtaposition of grand and commonplace elements of architecture on a single building facade and the link between the inside and outside world created by doors and windows are other important elements in his work. He often emphasises these by the use of a curtain blowing, a figure leaning from a window or being glimpsed through a doorway. The reliefs are made from smooth stoneware clay which has been fired to 1110°C and then painted with heavy-body acrylics over an acrylic gesso primer, using a technique layering translucent washes similar to water-colour painting.
